Winter Vegetable Gardens

greens
With mild winters becoming more frequent, winter gardening has gained popularity in much of the USA.

Winter gardeners experience a range of success, depending on temperatures, precipitation, techniques, and other factors.

Winter gardens provide a host of benefits. Late season crops can provide food as well as providing ground cover.

In addition to producing crops, winter gardening also provides landowners with a reason to get outside and be active.

In many areas, root crops such as turnips, carrots, parsnips, onions, and others can be started in the fall and allowed to remain in the ground for part or all of the winter.

Leafy vegetables are popular in winter gardens. Members of the kale family are the most popular, including turnip greens, kale, winter cress, cabbage, and others. Lettuce and spinach also thrive in winter in some locations.

Several herbs can be grown during mild winters, including cilantro, dill, and chives.

A wide range of equipment is available for winter gardening, including row covers, mini-greenhouses, and other accessories.
